A Deep Chested Imposing Colt Thats Destined To Be A Genuine 2YO Blue Diamond / 3YO Guineas Contender

Our Purpose To Buying This Colt

Matt Cumani and I have been looking for a BIG horse that has the pedigree and quality to break through for our first Group 1 as an alliance.

This colt is a quality colt from the highly lucrative Fastnet Rock x Success Express Cross which has produced over 60 stakes winners to date.

But before going into detail, let me bring things into perspective with a short story about the Great Fastnet Rock...

I am going back a little while now. Back to 2004.

I had quite a bit to do with the Waterhouse stable then.

There was this very strong imposing bay gelding by Danezero which won the Magic Millions and the team had high hopes he would go on to claim the Slipper in this same year.

Gai's mother Valerie was an owner in this gelding, and there is a great story about how she became involved in him, but we can share this story another time.

The gelding's name was Dance Hero.

Dance Hero

On the day of the Slipper, the team was very nervous about another striking bay colt which was regally bred and expected to be the horse open to the greatest amount of improvement over time.

I never forget the way this colt presented on this day.

As I would do prior to any race, i would be standing by the rail of the parade enclosure, weighing the angles and gestures of each of our opponent horses prior to them being let out onto the track.

This impressive bay colt stopped short in front of me, swung his head high and then he then looked right down his nose at me and eye balled me with a complete sense of confidence and sureness.

This colt moved with such purpose, quality and balance.

As his body moved, his head remained steady and straight as an arrow.

It was perfection in equine movement.

This was Golden Slipper day with 1000's of people in attendance, and this is a colt having just his 3rd start...

The team became very anxious...

But...

The day ended in the most perfect way...

Dance Hero went on to win the Slipper this day.

Dance Hero then went on to win the Triple Crown and possibly should be celebrated as the best 2YO ever in Australia.

The Striking Bay colt came 4th.

His name was Fastnet Rock.

There was something uniquely special about this colt.

This colt was always destined for greatness.

Fast forward 17 years and he is undeniably the greatest Stallion in the Southern Hemisphere.

Just in this 20/21 season alone, he has already amassed 5 Individual Group 1 Winners!

It has taken almost 17 years to have the opportunity purchase a quality offspring from this Champion Stallion.

Mostly because of price, Fastnet Rock's Service fee was $275,000.

Another being the fact I wanted to find a colt that reminded me so much of that amazing Bay colt I saw on Slipper day in 2004.

This colt in build, balance, temperament and movement reminds me so much of his father Fastnet Rock.

He was individually assessed by Matt Cumani, Lenny Russo and myself and rated A+ on each of our lists.

I have provided video of Fastnet Rock below and if you do a simple search, there is many videos and photos that can be accessed of him to reference.

I allow you to be judge for yourself of how close a resemblence this colt is to his father.

He is already an imposing individual now and no question he will be up to his ears in the 2YO racing, Magic Millions and beyond.

This is not a colt we hope will make it to metro level.

This is a colt with an enormous pedigree destined to win at the highest level.

  • Fastnet Rock is a Champion Racehorse with a Champion Thoroughbred's Pedigree.

His first three dams had all been Stakes-Performed Multiple Winners and boasted solid breeding records.

He is now firmly entrenched as the Best Sire In The Southern Hemisphere.

Just in this 20/21 Season, Fastnet Rock has sired 5 Individual Group 1 Winners - Avantage, Dreamforce, Personal, Prince Fawaz, Sherwood Forest which simply is remarkable and clearly a standout to his peers.

"Fastnet Rock has made himself an International Force in breeding and racing, like his sire Danehill." Frank Mitchell.

There Is A Trick To Choosing Fastnet Rock Prospects

The beauty of going with Proven Stallions such as Fastnet Rock , is that you have well over 15 years of data / crops to analyse.

He is a Proven Sire and due to such history, you know exactly what to look for - when searching for a quality Fastnet Rock prospect.

This brings the odds much more to your favour than when speculating with progeny of new Stallions or first season sires.

The first thing to look for with a Fastnet Rock prospect is balance.

Eighty percent of the time a horse is running, his legs are off the ground.

A great horse needs to be balanced, and Fastnet Rock was just that, a balanced, medium-sized horse. Balance is the key to the fastest horses of all-time.

The results Fastnet Rock produces are outstanding, however one of the greatest issues observed in his less successful offspring is being overly large and having an unbalanced frame.

A trademark stamp from Fastnet Rock seen in his progeny is strength, muscle and bone.

However, unfortunately some of his prospects are built too large for their frame which unfortunately compounds into a major limitation for them.

They become speedy squibs which cut across the ground and can only run to distances up to 900m - 1000m.

The characteristics that you will find in all the great Fastnet Rock types are:

  • A Well-Chiseled Head On A Long Neck

  • High Withers

  • Deep Chest

  • Short Back

  • Good Depth Of Hindquarters

  • Another giveaway between the average and the excellent types when you inspect a Fastnet Rock prospect is the way they walk.

A good Fastnet Rock type should move well no matter what the pace may be, although most will move better in some paces than others.

In particular with Fastnet Rock types, they must also 'track up' well which is where the back hoof comes over the mark left by its front foot.

This gives a strong indication of his athleticism and likelihood of carrying efficiencies in running resulting in covering more ground and more effective use of his power.

Fastnet Rock offspring almost always present power.... but combined with efficiency this has proven to be a devastating combination.

You can clearly see that this colt by Fastnet Rock x Zero Tolerance is an extremely well balanced, athletic colt.

He has a purposeful walk with a very smooth loose action that uses his upper body including his upper hind and shoulder.

This equates to a good overstep and provides all the indications he has a very efficient movement, giving him full opportunity to take advantage of his raw power.

Purposeful walk with a very loose action with a nice overstep.

As you can see in the video and picture below, he carries very common similarities to our colt both in type and in movement.

This colt came very much to mind when we inspected our Fastnet colt

  •   Winning Formula - Our colt has been built for Speed but additionally carries Strength Influences through Key Stallions. This is the exact formula leading to rise of great thoroughbreds in Australia such as Excites, Merchant Navy, Gold Edition, Empire's Choice, Atlantic Jewel etc

  •   Enicks A (+384%) - (Fact) 80% of all Stakes Winners are Enicks A or better. However only 18% of entire horse population are Enicks A or better. This colt is Enicks A (+384%)

  • Line Breeding

Jot This Down!! The pedigree of this colt has been reinforced through an Incredible 32

Duplications of Nijinkski II / Nearco / Hyperion / Mahmoud/ Nasrullah / Princequillo.

*Redoutes Choice, Excites and Gold Edition are examples of horses sharing similar lines.

This breeder really knew what he was doing when he set out to breed this prospect!

The pedigree of superior racehorses in Australia have three to four facets of support utilised.

They have line bred characteristics of speed followed with multiple duplications of proven common ancestors which are dominant in providing constitution and strength.

The breeder clearly knew what he was doing when producing this colt. This colt has been bred with highlighted Speed through proven dosage traits of Bletchingly, Northern Dancer, Danehill and Danzig, .

However he has reinforced the strength of this colt through an incredible 32 duplications of Nijinski II, Nasrullah / Princequillo

Nearco / Hyperion/ Mahmoud which provide constitution of Strength.

Redoutes Choice and Excites are examples of horses line bred for speed and being supported with similar strength duplications.

  •   This is a Pedigree page prolific with success.

The Second dam Bonanova being the Second Top filly in Australasia and a GP1 winner whom has gone to become a Blue hen producing multiple Balck type winnners.

3rd Dam St Klaire also a Stakes winner was categorised as the No.1 producing mare in Australia.

Our colt's dam Zero Tolerance looks headed the same way producing a promising colt which has already gone on to win after 2 starts. Our colt (through Fastnet Rock) is a major upgrade to her first foal.

  • Conformation

To identify key intended genetic traits passed through to prospect and confirm soundness

  •   Well Set Wither and Closed Shoulders. Wither sitting further backwards over the girth allowing longer and more angled shoulder blade which will allow this colt to have much longer stride (See below)

  •   Airways - Throat Index = 3.0. A racehorse needs abundant fuel / oxygen to maintain speed in a race. It is a long distance between nostrils and lungs. As such it is a huge advantage to have large airways to get fuel to the target efficiently. Average windpipe of horse measures a score of 2.0. Our colt measured 3.0. Huge Plus.

  •   Large Prime Movers Fore and Hind. This colt has the rare qualites of possessing a large Sloping shoulder blade as well as well developed pelvis and femur (hind quarters). This is rare. The benefit of this feature is that this colt should acquire a very powerful burst of acceleration (large pelvis and femur) and because of his angled shoulder - should be able to maintain this speed over further distance (larger stride / efficiency ++)

  • STEP 2: It's extremely important that when you go and look at your prospect that you

can observe some of these dominant traits actually being present in the horse.

You want to find a horse that's balanced biomechanically.

FACT : When you go to a sale over 70% of horses are unbalanced!

    Selection Strategy

Prior to any sales, pedigree reasearch is conducted on all potential prospects.

A list is formed. Lenny Russo then travels to stud farms to inspect prospect prior to coming to sales. Behavioural and Physical details are documented for further reference when inspecting on week of sales (any changes Mental/Behavioual/Physical)

On Week of sales the three man team (Matt Cumani, Lenny Russo, myself) will individually inspect and score all prospects at sale.

We then come together and compare scores which are rated A to D.

All horses that are rated A across all score charts are shortlisted and a price estimation is established. The horse is then scoped and x-ray checked.

A horse that is then secured if it can secured below estimated price.
